Really interesting piece by Leslie Hewitt, as part of her series Riffs on Real Time. Initially, the composition seems a bit random, but upon closer examination, it is so cleverly done. The combination of a personal snapshot, hand lettering, and a page of definitions (including “catastrophic”, “consumer”, and “diplomacy”) creates an effect that is simultaneously politically-charged and intimately personal. It is such a conceptual piece with so many possible layers of meaning–the more I study it, the more I love it!

Currently on display at MoMA, as part of the exhibition “XL: 19 New Acquisitions in Photography.” This was my favorite of Hewitt’s pieces, but there are definitely others on display that are worth checking out!
