“Don’t try to be original, just try to be good.”

Paul Rand(August 15,1914-November 26th, 1996) was an American graphic designer. He is best known for the corporate logos he designed(IBM, UPS, ABC,neXT).

Below is a link to a youtube video of Paul Rand speaking about design.

A few things he mentioned in the video caught my attention:

-Without form, there is no content and without content there is no form

-“Don’t try to be original, just try to be good. That sounds sort’ve niece, but it’s true”

In the video he lists the ‘language of form’ or ‘vocab of aesthetics’

  • Order
  • Variety
  • Contrast
  • Symmetry
  • Tension
  • Balance
  • Scale
  • Texture
  • Shade
  • Color
  • Shape
  • Light

The video itself is designed to engage the audience. Images on the screen recreate themselves to form new ones.

I hope you all enjoy!
